Shillong to Guwahati Airport Drop: When Should You Leave?

For a domestic flight from Guwahati Airport (GAU), plan to leave Shillong about 5 to 5.5 hours before departure. The drive itself usually takes 3 to 3.5 hours, and the extra time covers traffic around Jorabat and Guwahati, weather and the airline check-in window. Below we explain how to adjust that buffer for the time of day, the season and any stops you want to make.

The basic calculation

Work backwards from your flight time:

  • Airline cut-off. For domestic flights, airlines generally ask you to reach the airport about 2 hours before departure, and bag drop closes earlier than boarding. Check your airline's own guidance, as it can differ.
  • Drive time. Shillong to Guwahati Airport is roughly 120 km and usually 3 to 3.5 hours.
  • Buffer. Add at least 30 to 60 minutes for traffic, a short break or unexpected slowdowns.

So for a 2 pm flight, leaving Shillong between 8:30 and 9 am is a comfortable plan. Leaving later is possible on a quiet day, but it removes your margin for error.

Tip: Count backwards from the time you want to be at the check-in counter, not from the departure time. That one change prevents most missed-flight stress.

Jorabat and the time-of-day factor

The downhill drive from Shillong to Jorabat is usually smooth. Most delays come after that, at the Jorabat junction and in Guwahati city.

  • Early morning. Roads are generally at their quietest. Trucks may still be moving around Jorabat, but city traffic is light.
  • Late morning to afternoon. Traffic builds in Guwahati. Expect the stretch from Jorabat to the airport to take longer than it would at dawn.
  • Evening. Weekday evenings tend to be the slowest, with office traffic in Guwahati and queues at Jorabat. If your flight is in the evening, leave earlier than the basic calculation suggests.

Shillong itself can be congested in the morning and evening, especially around Police Bazar and on the roads out of the city. Your driver may suggest a pickup time that avoids the worst of it.

Early-morning flights

Morning flights from Guwahati are popular, but they mean a very early start from Shillong. For a flight around 8 am, you would usually need to leave between 2:30 and 3 am.

A few points to plan around:

  • Settle your hotel bill and pack the night before. Many hotels have limited front-desk staff at that hour.
  • Keep a jacket handy. It is cold in Shillong before dawn for much of the year, and warmer once you descend into Assam.
  • Dhabas and tea stalls on the highway may not be open yet, so carry water and a snack.
  • If the timing feels too tight, consider spending your last night in Guwahati instead and taking a short drive to the airport in the morning.
Tip: For flights before about 9 am, compare the early start from Shillong with a night in Guwahati. Many travellers find the second option more restful, and it also gives you an evening to visit Guwahati.

Monsoon and weather delays

From roughly June to September, heavy rain is common in Meghalaya. The highway between Shillong and Guwahati is a major road and is generally kept open, but you may meet:

  • Slower driving in heavy rain and low cloud, especially on the hill section between Umiam and Nongpoh.
  • Occasional landslides or fallen trees that cause short closures or one-lane traffic.
  • Waterlogging on some roads in Guwahati after a heavy downpour.

During the monsoon, add another 30 to 60 minutes to your buffer. In winter, early-morning fog in the hills can also slow the first part of the drive. Road conditions change, so check the latest weather and local news before your travel day. Our post on the best time to visit Meghalaya covers what each season is like.

Making a stop at Umiam on the way

Umiam Lake is only about 15 to 20 km from Shillong, right on the airport road, so it is the easiest last stop of your trip. A quick photo stop at a viewpoint takes about 10 to 15 minutes. If you want to spend longer at the lakeside, allow 30 to 45 minutes and leave Shillong that much earlier.

Some travellers also break the journey at Nongpoh for tea or a meal. Tell your driver what you would like when you book, so the pickup time includes it.

A quick timing guide
