Guwahati Airport to Shillong Taxi: Route, Time & Tips

A taxi from Guwahati Airport (LGBI, code GAU) to Shillong covers about 120 km and usually takes 3 to 3.5 hours. The road runs through Guwahati to Jorabat, then climbs into Meghalaya on NH6 past Nongpoh and Umiam Lake before reaching Shillong. Here is what to expect on the drive and how to make the transfer smooth.

The route: airport to Shillong step by step

The drive breaks naturally into three parts.

  1. Airport to Jorabat (Assam). From the airport at Borjhar, your driver heads east across Guwahati towards Jorabat, the junction on the Assam and Meghalaya border where the Shillong road begins. This is flat city and highway driving, and it is the stretch where traffic varies the most.
  2. Jorabat to Nongpoh. After Jorabat the road enters Meghalaya and starts climbing through forested hills. The highway here is a wide, well-paved road with gentle bends. Nongpoh, roughly the halfway point, is the main town on this stretch.
  3. Nongpoh to Shillong via Umiam. The road keeps climbing, the air gets cooler and you pass Umiam Lake (often called Barapani) about 15 to 20 km before Shillong. From there it is a short run into the city.

Distances and timings are approximate. Road works, weather and diversions can change things, so treat 3 to 3.5 hours as a typical range rather than a promise.

Traffic around Jorabat

Jorabat is the one place where most delays happen. It is a busy junction where the Guwahati bypass, the Shillong road and traffic towards upper Assam meet, and heavy trucks often queue here. On a quiet day you pass through in minutes. At busy times, especially weekday evenings and around holidays, it can add half an hour or more.

Guwahati city traffic between the airport and Jorabat can also be slow during office hours. If your flight lands in the late afternoon, expect the first hour of the drive to be the slowest part.

Tip: If you land in the evening, carry a light jacket in your hand luggage. Shillong is noticeably cooler than Guwahati, and after dark the temperature drop is easy to feel once you pass Umiam.

Good stops on the way

The drive is short enough to do without stopping, but a break or two makes it more comfortable.

  • Nongpoh. The usual stop for tea, snacks or a quick meal. Roadside stalls here often sell local pineapples and other fruit depending on the season.
  • Umiam Lake viewpoint. The viewpoints above the lake are the most scenic spot on the route. Ten minutes here is enough for photos. If you want more time, there are lakeside spots for a longer break.
  • Clean washroom breaks. Ask your driver. They usually know which restaurants and dhabas along the highway have clean facilities.

If you have more time, you can plan a short sightseeing halt on the way in, but most travellers prefer to check in first and start sightseeing the next morning.

What to expect when you arrive in Shillong

Most hotels are in or around Police Bazar, the city centre, or in nearby areas like Laitumkhrah. The last few kilometres into the city can be slow in the evening, as Shillong roads are narrow and busy. Some hotel lanes are steep or tight, so your driver may drop you at the nearest convenient point if a large vehicle cannot reach the door.

Mobile signal is generally fine on the highway, though it can drop briefly in a few hilly stretches. Prepaid SIMs from other states usually work, but it is worth checking with your provider before travelling.

Why prebooking beats the airport queue

You can find taxis at Guwahati Airport, but booking in advance has clear advantages:

  • No waiting or bargaining. Your driver is already at arrivals when you walk out, and the fare is agreed before you travel.
  • Flight tracking. If you share your flight number, a delayed flight does not leave you stranded.
  • The right vehicle. You know in advance that your luggage and group will fit.
  • A driver who knows the hills. Drivers based in Shillong drive this route regularly and know where the slow patches and good stops are.
Tip: Send your flight number and the number of bags when you book. It helps match the vehicle and lets the driver adjust if your flight is early or late.

Sedan or SUV: choosing for your luggage

The right car depends mainly on how many people and bags you have.

VehicleBest forLuggage
Sedan (Dzire/Etios)1 to 3 travellersTwo large suitcases plus small bags, roughly
SUV (Ertiga)Families or groups of 4 to 5More space, especially if the third row is folded
Innova CrystaGroups wanting extra comfortGenerous space for bags and longer tour days
Tempo TravellerLarger groups (12 or 17 seats)Plenty of room for group luggage

A sedan is comfortable on the highway for a couple or small family with normal luggage. If you are carrying several large suitcases, travelling with children and a pram, or continuing on a multi-day tour, an SUV or Innova Crysta makes the trip easier. When in doubt, tell us your bag count and we will suggest a suitable option.
