Meghalaya is a compact hill state where you can see waterfalls, living root bridges, clear rivers and wide canyon views within a few hours' drive of Shillong. Most visitors fly or take a train to Guwahati, drive up to Shillong and use it as a base, so a 4 to 6 day trip by cab covers the main sights comfortably. This guide explains the regions, the best time to go, how to get there and a few sample routes.
Meghalaya at a glance
The state sits on a plateau, mostly between about 1,000 and 1,900 metres, so the weather stays mild for much of the year. It is home mainly to the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo communities, and Khasi society is matrilineal, with family names and property usually passing through the mother. English is widely spoken, and you will hear Khasi and Hindi in most tourist areas.
For travel purposes, think of Meghalaya as a hub (Shillong) with spokes running out to Sohra in the south, Dawki and Mawlynnong to the south-east, and shorter trips to Laitlum, Mawphlang and Umiam Lake. The Garo Hills in the west are far less visited and need separate planning.
Regions and hubs
Shillong
The capital and the natural base for most trips. Hotels, restaurants, ATMs and taxis are concentrated around Police Bazar. Local sights include Ward's Lake, Don Bosco Museum, Shillong Peak (inside an Air Force area, so access can vary), Elephant Falls and Umiam Lake on the way in from Guwahati.
Sohra (Cherrapunji)
Roughly 55 km from Shillong, usually about 1.5 to 2 hours by road. This is waterfall country: Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters (Nohsngithiang), Dainthlen and Wei Sawdong, along with Mawsmai Cave and the Eco Park. The trek to the double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat starts from Tyrna and involves a few thousand steps each way, so plan a full day for it. Our Cherrapunji places guide goes into more detail.
Dawki and Mawlynnong
Dawki sits on the Umngot River near the Bangladesh border, around 80 to 90 km from Shillong. In the dry months the water is clear enough to see the riverbed beneath the boats. Mawlynnong, known for its clean village streets, and the single living root bridge at Riwai are close by, so most people combine the three in one long day. See the Dawki and Umngot River guide for boating and timing tips.
Laitlum
About an hour from Shillong, Laitlum is a ridge-top viewpoint over deep green gorges. It is at its best early in the morning or in clear post-monsoon weather. Fog can roll in quickly, so keep the plan flexible.
Mawphlang sacred forest
Around 25 km from Shillong, the Mawphlang sacred grove has been protected by the local community for generations. Walks are usually led by local guides who explain its customs. The best-known rule is that nothing, not even a leaf or a stone, should be taken out of the forest.
Top places by area
- Shillong and around: Umiam Lake, Ward's Lake, Don Bosco Museum, Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak, Laitlum, Mawphlang.
- Sohra: Nohkalikai Falls, Seven Sisters Falls, Mawsmai Cave, Arwah Cave, Dainthlen Falls, Wei Sawdong, Nongriat root bridge trek.
- East Khasi Hills border belt: Dawki and Shnongpdeng on the Umngot, Mawlynnong, Riwai root bridge, Krang Suri Falls (in the Jaintia Hills, often added on a longer day).
- Jaintia Hills: Nartiang monoliths, Jowai, Krang Suri, and the drive through pine-covered country.
Best time to visit
October to April is the most reliable window for sightseeing. October and November bring clear skies and full waterfalls after the rains. December to February is cool to cold, especially at night, with mostly dry roads. March and April are pleasant and the Umngot is usually at its clearest.
June to September is the monsoon. Sohra is among the wettest places in India, and the waterfalls are spectacular, but fog, landslides and slow roads are common and river boating at Dawki may be suspended. If you travel in the monsoon, keep buffer time and avoid tight flight connections. Read more in our best time to visit Meghalaya post.
How to reach Meghalaya
Most travellers arrive at Guwahati. Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) has the widest choice of flights, and Guwahati railway station is the main rail hub for the region. From either point, Shillong is roughly 100 km by road, usually about 3 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic in Guwahati and Jorabat. The road climbs past Umiam Lake, which makes a good first stop.
Shillong Airport at Umroi is about 30 km from the city but has limited flights, so most itineraries still start from Guwahati. There is no passenger railway line into Shillong at present.
A pre-booked cab is the simplest option, especially with luggage or a late arrival. Our Guwahati airport to Shillong taxi guide covers the route and timing, and you can also arrange an airport transfer directly.
How many days do you need?
- 3 days: Shillong local sights and one full day in Sohra. Tight but workable.
- 4 to 5 days: Shillong, Sohra, a Dawki and Mawlynnong day, and Laitlum or Mawphlang. This is the most popular length and matches our Meghalaya Explorer package.
- 6 to 7 days: Add an overnight in Sohra for the Nongriat trek, a Jaintia Hills day, or combine with Kaziranga in Assam.

Local etiquette
- Ask before photographing people, especially in villages and at homes.
- Respect community rules. Many sights are on village or clan land, and the local committee usually collects a small entry or parking fee. Follow posted signs, especially at sacred groves.
- Do not litter. Villages like Mawlynnong take cleanliness seriously. Carry your waste back with you.
- Dress modestly in villages and religious places. Most of the state is Christian, so Sundays are quieter and some shops and attractions may run shorter hours.
Practical tips
- Cash: ATMs are easy to find in Shillong but scarce in Sohra, Dawki and the villages. UPI works in many places, but network gaps mean cash is the safer backup for entry fees, boating and small eateries.
- Network: Mobile coverage is patchy on the Dawki road, in valleys around Sohra and near the border. Download offline maps and share your plan with someone before setting out.
- Weather: Carry a light rain jacket or umbrella in every season. Mornings and evenings get cold from November to February, so pack a warm layer.
- Roads: Hill roads are narrow and winding, and fog can cut visibility sharply. Distances look short on a map but take longer than you expect. Roads and local rules change, so check the latest conditions before travelling.
- Timing: Daylight ends early in the North East, often by around 5 pm in winter. Plan long sightseeing days to start early.

Frequently asked questions
How many days are enough for Meghalaya?
Four to five days is enough for Shillong, Sohra, Dawki and Mawlynnong at a comfortable pace. Add a day or two for the Nongriat root bridge trek or a Jaintia Hills trip.
Which is the nearest airport to Shillong?
Shillong Airport at Umroi is closest but has limited flights. Most travellers fly into Guwahati, which is roughly 3 to 3.5 hours from Shillong by road.
Is Meghalaya worth visiting in the monsoon?
The waterfalls are at their fullest from June to September, but heavy rain, fog and landslides can slow travel and boating at Dawki may be stopped. Keep extra time in your plan if you go then.
Should I stay in Shillong or Cherrapunji?
Shillong is the most convenient base for most of the state. An overnight in Sohra makes sense if you plan to trek to the Nongriat double-decker root bridge.
Do I need cash in Meghalaya?
Yes, carry some. ATMs are limited outside Shillong and mobile networks can drop, so digital payments do not always work in villages.
