Meghalaya 5-Day Itinerary by Cab from Guwahati Airport
A practical Meghalaya 5-day itinerary by cab from Guwahati Airport: Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki and Mawlynnong with drive times, stays and what to skip.
The road trip from Guwahati to Tawang is usually done over two days: Guwahati to Dirang via Bhalukpong on the first day, then over the Sela Pass to Tawang on the second. It is one of the most dramatic drives in India, climbing from the Assam plains to well over 4,000 metres. This guide covers the route, the sights, permits, altitude, the best months and why the driver you choose matters.
From Guwahati you drive north-east through the plains towards Tezpur, cross the Brahmaputra and head to Bhalukpong, the entry checkpoint into Arunachal Pradesh. This first part is roughly 5 hours. Your permits are checked here.
After Bhalukpong the road starts climbing through forest along the Kameng river, past Tenga and up to Bomdila, then down into the Dirang valley. In total, Day 1 is a long day of about 9 to 11 hours on the road, so leave Guwahati early, ideally by 6 am. If you prefer shorter days, break the journey at Bhalukpong or Bomdila instead.
Dirang, at roughly 1,500 metres, is a good place to sleep before going higher. It has apple and kiwi orchards, a hot spring and the old Dirang Dzong area.
Dirang to Tawang is roughly 135 to 145 km and usually takes about 5 to 7 hours, depending on the road, weather and how often you stop. The road climbs steeply towards Sela, at roughly 4,170 metres (about 13,700 feet).
The Sela Tunnel, opened in 2024, now gives an all-weather route that bypasses the highest section of the pass and is meant to keep the road open more reliably in winter. Most tourists still want to see Sela Lake and the pass itself, so check with your driver on the day whether to take the tunnel, the old pass road, or both, depending on weather and road status.
After Sela you descend past the Jaswant Garh war memorial and Jang, with the Nuranang (Jang) waterfall nearby, before climbing again to Tawang, at roughly 3,000 metres.
Madhuri Lake and Bum La need extra permits beyond the standard ILP. These are typically arranged in Tawang a day in advance, and visits depend on weather, road conditions and army clearance on the day. Bum La can be closed at short notice, so treat it as a possibility, not a guarantee. Rules change, so check locally when you arrive.
Plan at least two full days in Tawang: one for the town sights and one for Madhuri Lake and Bum La if permits come through.
Going from near sea level in Guwahati to over 4,000 metres at Sela in about two days is a big jump. Altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of fitness.
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| March to May | Pleasant days, cold nights, flowers in bloom; one of the best windows |
| June to September | Monsoon; landslides and road blocks are more likely, views often cloudy |
| October to November | Usually clear skies and crisp weather; another very good window |
| December to February | Snow and very cold; beautiful but roads, Bum La and lakes may be closed |

The Tawang road has long climbs, tight bends, sections under construction, and stretches where landslides or snow can block traffic for hours. Army convoys use the same road. A driver who knows this route will:
For this route a sturdy SUV such as an Innova Crysta or Ertiga is usually the right choice, and a Tempo Traveller can work for larger groups in good season.
Pranjal Taxi Service runs Tawang trips with drivers used to Arunachal hill roads. Our Tawang Himalayan Adventure covers Bhalukpong, Dirang, Sela, Tawang and Bomdila over 6N/7D, at a pace that allows for acclimatisation. Plan at least 6 to 7 days in total: two days each way on the road plus two or more days in Tawang. Rushing it leaves little time to adjust to the altitude.
Indian visitors from outside Arunachal Pradesh need an Inner Line Permit, and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit. Bum La and Madhuri Lake need extra permissions arranged locally.
No. Visits need a separate permit and army clearance, and the pass can close at short notice due to weather or other reasons. Treat it as possible, not guaranteed.
March to May and October to November are usually the best windows. Winter brings snow and possible closures, and the monsoon makes landslides more likely.
Not necessarily. The tunnel bypasses the highest section, but in good conditions you can usually still take the old pass road to see the lake. Your driver will advise on the day.
