Meghalaya 5-Day Itinerary by Cab from Guwahati Airport

Five days is a comfortable amount of time to see the best of Meghalaya by cab: Shillong, Cherrapunji, the Umngot river at Dawki and Mawlynnong village, starting and ending at Guwahati Airport. Below is a day-by-day plan with realistic drive times, where to stay each night and what to drop if you are short on time. All timings are approximate and depend on traffic, weather and how long you linger at each stop.

Day 1: Guwahati Airport to Shillong

The road from Guwahati Airport to Shillong is roughly 120 km and usually takes 3 to 3.5 hours, longer if you hit Guwahati city traffic around Jorabat or arrive at peak hours. It is a good four-lane highway for most of the way, climbing steadily into the Khasi Hills.

Stop at Umiam Lake (Barapani) about 30 to 40 minutes before Shillong for tea and a view of the reservoir. In the evening, walk around Police Bazar and Ward's Lake, which are both central and easy to explore on foot.

For details on this transfer, read our Guwahati Airport to Shillong taxi guide.

Tip: If your flight lands after about 3 pm, keep Day 1 simple. You will reach Shillong in the evening, and the hill section is more relaxing in daylight.

Day 2: Shillong sightseeing, then Cherrapunji

Spend the morning on a few Shillong highlights before heading south. Good options are Elephant Falls, the Don Bosco Museum on Northeast cultures, and Laitlum Canyons if the weather is clear. Shillong Peak is sometimes on lists too, but access passes through an Air Force area and can be restricted, so check on the day.

After lunch, drive to Cherrapunji (Sohra), roughly 55 km and about 1.5 to 2 hours. On the way, stop at Mawkdok Dympep valley viewpoint and Wah Kaba Falls. Check in to your Cherrapunji stay before dark.

Where to stay: Cherrapunji has a range of resorts and homestays, many with valley views. Staying here for two nights saves you a lot of back-and-forth driving.

Day 3: Cherrapunji waterfalls and caves

This is your sightseeing day in and around Sohra. You have two styles to choose from.

Option A: classic sightseeing

  • Nohkalikai Falls, one of the tallest plunge waterfalls in India.
  • Mawsmai Cave, a short, lit limestone cave walk.
  • Seven Sisters Falls (Nohsngithiang), at its best in and just after the monsoon.
  • Arwah Cave and the Eco Park, if time allows.

Option B: the double-decker root bridge trek

If you are fit, drive to Tyrna (around 30 to 45 minutes from Cherrapunji town) and trek down to the Nongriat double-decker root bridge. It is a long day on thousands of steps, so you will not fit much else in. Our living root bridges guide explains the trek in detail.

For more ideas, see our list of places to visit in Cherrapunji.

Day 4: Mawlynnong, Riwai and Dawki

This is the longest day, so start early, ideally by 7 or 7.30 am. Check out of Cherrapunji and drive towards the Bangladesh border region via the Pynursla side. Reaching Mawlynnong usually takes about 2.5 to 3.5 hours from Cherrapunji, depending on the road.

  • Mawlynnong: walk the village, often called Asia's cleanest, and climb the bamboo Sky View platform.
  • Riwai root bridge: a short, easy walk close to Mawlynnong, perfect if you skipped Nongriat.
  • Dawki and the Umngot river: roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Mawlynnong. Take a boat ride on the clear green water at Shnongpdeng or Dawki when boating is open.

Dawki to Shillong is about 80 to 95 km and usually takes 2.5 to 3 hours. You will reach Shillong in the evening. The river is clearest in the drier months, roughly November to April, and boating may be suspended when the water is high. More in our Dawki travel guide.

Where to stay: Shillong, which also puts you closer to the airport for Day 5. If you prefer a quieter night, Mawlynnong and Shnongpdeng have homestays and riverside camps, but Day 5 then becomes a longer drive.

Tip: Keep your Day 4 bags packed the night before. A 7 am start from Cherrapunji makes the difference between enjoying Dawki in good light and rushing it.

Day 5: Shillong to Guwahati Airport

Have a relaxed breakfast and, if your flight is in the afternoon, fit in a quick stop such as the cathedral or a local market. Leave Shillong with a generous buffer: plan to reach the airport at least 2 hours before a domestic flight, and add extra time for traffic around Jorabat and Guwahati. Our post on Shillong to Guwahati Airport drop timing helps you work out when to leave.

Short on time? What to skip

  • Only 4 days: combine Day 2 and Day 3 into one Cherrapunji day trip from Shillong and skip the Nongriat trek. You lose a relaxed evening in Sohra but keep the main waterfalls.
  • Only 3 days: pick either Cherrapunji or Dawki and Mawlynnong, not both. Trying to do both in a single day means most of your time is spent in the car.
  • Skip first: Shillong Peak (access can be restricted), Arwah Cave and Eco Park, and the longer Rainbow Falls extension beyond Nongriat.
  • Do not skip: Nohkalikai, the Umngot river in the dry season, and at least one root bridge.

Which vehicle suits this trip?

For two to four people, a sedan or an Ertiga is usually comfortable. Families with more luggage often prefer an Innova Crysta for the longer hill days, and groups of 8 or more can take a Tempo Traveller. Pricing depends on the final itinerary, vehicle and season, so ask us for a free quote rather than relying on old figures online.

Weather and road conditions in Meghalaya can change quickly, particularly during the monsoon from roughly June to September. Check our Meghalaya travel guide and stay flexible with the order of days.

How long is the drive from Guwahati Airport to Shillong?

It is roughly 120 km and usually takes about 3 to 3.5 hours, depending on traffic around Guwahati and Jorabat.
