Guwahati Airport to Shillong Taxi: Route, Time & Tips
Guwahati Airport to Shillong taxi guide: the NH6 route via Jorabat, Nongpoh and Umiam, travel time, traffic, good stops and choosing a sedan or SUV.
Kaziranga National Park in Assam is the best place in the world to see the greater one-horned rhinoceros, and a jeep safari through its grasslands is the main way to do it. The park is generally open from November to April and closed during the monsoon, and it is about 4 to 5 hours by road from Guwahati. Here is how the zones work, which safari to choose and how to fit Kaziranga into a trip with Shillong.
Kaziranga stretches along the south bank of the Brahmaputra, a mix of tall elephant grass, wetlands and patches of forest. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds a large share of the world's one-horned rhinos. You also have a good chance of seeing wild water buffalo, swamp deer (barasingha), hog deer, wild elephants and plenty of birds. Kaziranga is also a tiger reserve, but tigers are rarely spotted, so treat any sighting as a bonus.
The park is divided into ranges, each with its own entry gate. Each has a different feel, so many visitors try to cover two zones across a morning and an afternoon.
The most popular zone and the easiest to reach, since most lodges are around Kohora. It offers a good mix of grassland and water bodies and is known for frequent rhino, buffalo and deer sightings. If you only have time for one safari, this is usually the safe choice.
Often said to have the highest density of rhinos, with wide open grassland that makes viewing easier. Bagori is a short drive west of Kohora and is a strong pick for photographers.
Further east and usually quieter, with more wetlands and good birdlife, including pelicans and storks in season. It suits keen birders and those who prefer fewer vehicles around them.
The westernmost range, with more hilly, wooded terrain. It is less visited and has a different landscape from the open grasslands, which some repeat visitors enjoy.
| Jeep safari | Elephant safari | |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | Morning and afternoon slots | Usually early morning only |
| Duration | Roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours | Short, usually under an hour |
| Coverage | Covers much more ground | Small area near the gate |
| Availability | All main ranges | Limited zones and seats |
Jeep safaris are the practical choice for most visitors. Open-top gypsies with a forest guard take you along set tracks, and you cover a fair distance in a few hours. Slots are usually morning and afternoon.
Elephant safaris have traditionally been offered at dawn in some ranges, mainly Central and Western. They get you close to rhinos in the tall grass, but seats are limited and availability can change from season to season. Some travellers also choose to skip them for animal welfare reasons, which is a personal call.
Safari and park entry fees are set by the forest department and change from time to time, and foreign nationals pay different rates. Check the official Kaziranga or Assam forest department information, or the ticket counter, for current rates. We do not quote these fees ourselves.
The park is generally open from November to April and closed for safaris during the monsoon, when the Brahmaputra floods large parts of it and animals move to higher ground. Some ranges may open a little earlier or later in a given year depending on conditions, so check the official announcement before you book.
Kohora, the main base, is roughly 200 km from Guwahati and usually takes about 4 to 5 hours by road via the national highway through Nagaon. The road is mostly good, and you pass tea gardens as you get closer. Expect slower stretches through towns and some construction work in places.
If you are flying in, a cab from Guwahati Airport straight to Kaziranga works well: land in the morning, and you can reach Kohora by afternoon for check-in. Plan your safaris for the next day.
Kaziranga and Meghalaya pair very well. Shillong to Kohora is roughly 6 hours by road, going down to Jorabat near Guwahati and then east, so most people do it as a single travel day.
A common pattern is:
Our Assam + Meghalaya Combo follows this route, and the shorter Kaziranga Wildlife Trail covers just the park. For more on the state, see our Assam travel guide, and for the Meghalaya side, our 5-day Meghalaya itinerary.
Pranjal Taxi Service runs cabs from Guwahati and Shillong to Kaziranga, and can plan the drive around your safari slots. Our drivers can then take you on to Shillong and the rest of Meghalaya. WhatsApp us your travel dates for a free quote.
It is generally open for safaris from November to April and closed during the monsoon. Exact opening dates for each range can vary by year, so check the official announcement.
The Central (Kohora) and Western (Bagori) ranges are usually the best for rhino sightings. Many visitors book one safari in each.
Kohora is roughly 200 km from Guwahati and usually takes about 4 to 5 hours by road.
It is not recommended. The drive is roughly 6 hours each way, so plan at least one night near the park.
Safari and entry fees are set by the forest department and change from time to time. Check the official forest department information or the ticket counter for current rates.
